Professional Hydromulching in Sacramento County

Heavy-duty soil stabilization for steep slopes, burn scars, and active construction sites.

When standard seeding isn’t enough to hold the earth in place, NorCal Erosion Control delivers industrial-strength protection with our professional hydromulching services. By applying a thick, moisture-locking blanket of wood fiber, paper mulch, and heavy-duty tackifiers, we instantly armor bare soil against the destructive forces of wind and heavy Sacramento Valley rains.

What is Hydromulching?

Hydromulching is a specialized erosion control process that uses a high-pressure hose to spray a thick slurry of natural fiber mulch, water, and specialized bonding agents (tackifiers) directly onto bare earth. Unlike hydroseeding which is focused primarily on growing vegetation hydromulching is designed first and foremost to physically lock down the soil structure.
The slurry dries into a breathable, protective crust that prevents sediment runoff, absorbs rain energy, and traps moisture in the soil below. While seed can be included in the mix, the primary goal of hydromulching is immediate, heavy-duty surface stabilization.

Ideal Applications for Hydromulching

Extreme Slopes & Embankments

Gravity is your worst enemy on a steep grade. Our heavy-duty tackifiers glue the fiber matrix directly to sheer inclines, preventing mudslides and deep channeling during heavy winter storms.

Post-Wildfire Recovery & Burn Scars

When wildfires destroy root systems, the resulting bare ash and soil are incredibly vulnerable to catastrophic runoff. Hydromulching is the fastest, most effective way to lock down burn scars and prevent toxic sediment from contaminating local waterways.

Commercial SWPPP Compliance

Construction sites with disturbed soil must meet strict Regional Water Quality Control Board regulations. Hydromulching is an approved, highly effective Best Management Practice (BMP) to keep your project compliant and inspection-ready.

Post-Grading Soil Stabilization

After heavy earthmoving equipment leaves the site, hydromulching secures the final grade until permanent landscaping or construction can begin, preventing costly rework.

The Hydromulching Advantage

Immediate Erosion Protection

You don't have to wait for seeds to germinate. The moment our hydromulch slurry cures on your property, your soil is protected from washouts and wind erosion. It’s an instant barrier for high-risk sites.

Moisture Retention for Poor Soils

The thick fiber matrix acts like a sponge, holding vital moisture against the soil surface. This creates an ideal micro-environment for natural vegetation to establish itself, even in the dry, clay-heavy soils common throughout Sacramento County.

100% Biodegradable & Eco-Friendly

Our mulch slurries are made from natural wood and paper fibers that are completely safe for the environment. Over time, the mulch breaks down naturally, adding valuable organic matter back into the depleted soil.

No Netting or Plastics Left Behind

Unlike synthetic erosion control blankets that can trap wildlife or require manual removal, hydromulching provides blanket-like protection without leaving behind any plastic netting or synthetic debris.

Secure Your Soil Before the Next Storm

Don’t leave your vulnerable slopes and graded sites exposed to the elements. Protect your property with the heavy-duty stabilization of professional hydromulching.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dust Control

Both use the same spray equipment, but the purpose is different. Hydroseeding is primarily about establishing vegetation seed is the star of the mix and the mulch is its carrier. Hydromulching is primarily about physically locking down bare soil; the thick fiber layer is the product, and seed is optional. Think of hydromulching as a blanket protecting your earth, and hydroseeding as planting a garden inside a protected bed.
It can, but not always. When the project goal is immediate surface stabilization such as a freshly graded lot, a construction site, or a post-fire slope we may apply a pure hydromulch with no seed. When the goal is both stabilization and vegetation establishment, we blend in an appropriate seed mix. We’ll recommend the right approach during your free site assessment based on your specific needs and timeline.
Standard wood fiber and paper hydromulch breaks down naturally within 3 to 6 months under normal Northern California weather conditions. That timeframe is intentional; it’s designed to protect the soil while permanent vegetation takes root. By the time the mulch fully decomposes, your plant roots should be doing the stabilization work on their own.
Yes but we may recommend a reinforced application approach. On slopes steeper than 45 degrees or with highly erodible soils, we can increase the tackifier concentration in the slurry for maximum adhesion, and in some cases recommend combining hydromulching with physical erosion control products like fiber rolls or biodegradable matting for added security at the base and toe of the slope.
Post-fire timing is critical. We recommend hydromulching as soon as it is safe to access the property ideally before the first significant rainfall after the fire. Ash and hydrophobic (water-repellent) soils left behind by wildfires are extremely vulnerable to catastrophic runoff even during moderate rain events. We have experience working in El Dorado, Nevada, and Placer County foothill communities and understand the urgency of post-fire response.
Yes. All of the mulch and tackifier products we use are made from natural organic fibers and water-based binders that are fully non-toxic and safe for application near water bodies. We always follow California Department of Fish & Wildlife setback guidelines when working adjacent to streams and waterways.
Clear the area of large debris, rocks, and construction materials. If the site has been freshly graded, that’s ideal we can spray directly onto the prepared earth. If there is existing dead vegetation, it should be removed or mowed down to ensure the slurry makes direct contact with the soil. Our crew will do a quick site walk before spraying to flag any issues.
